Ceiling Insulation Installation Faults:

batt insulation problems1.CORNERS and EDGES: Batts not fitted out into the corners and edges particularly in low pitched roofs. such as the modern brick veneer, these batt jobs may look reasonable when looking down on the batt insulation from high on the roof, however on inspection out in the corners and edges it's common to find a gap right around the perimeter of the ceiling where there is no insulation, these gaps can be anywhere from around 3% upwards... effectively halving the thermal R- value of your insulation investment. (NOT GOOD)

AIRSPACE UNDER BATT: In older styler homes batts sit on batons between joists leaving a gap between the ceiling and insulation batt for heat transference to take place. Heat transference takes place through this airspace and the gaps.Heat leaks out in winter. Heat pressurizes into the home in summer through these pathways.
3. OVERLAPPING: Overlapping timbers,batts not cut to join the timber flush, this creates an airspace under the batt as it overlaps the timber, allowing heat transference in winter and summer.
4.SPACES: left open/ un-insulated. Spaces where batts fall short.
5. INCORRECT SIZING - Because Ceiling timbers/ joists vary in their widths and are not always placed at standard intervals, precut batts often don't fit properly. This can result in regular occurring gaps,spaces and also bowing of the insulation batts (see below #14).
6.COMPRESSED: Compressed, forced or squashed between timbers and not expanding up to full thickness resulting in reduced r-value as their are less airlocks between the fibres.. Shoved down under beams crossing joists, resulting in reduced r-value.
7.PLACED OVER PIPES AND WIRES: Batts Uneven and not flush with ceilings:Pipes Wires ; Conduits create great difficulty for the batt installer to achieve an even coverage. Often placed over a pipe...over wires ...causing the batt to not sit flush on the ceiling, therefore creating an open pathway for heat loss and heat gain.

8. SPACES AROUND DOWNLIGHTS: Too large a space left around down lights, falling short of proper coverage. Un insulated space. This image also showing the insulation is low and needs upgrading. (The image here also shows low batt insulation, split batts.

Note: Batt type insulation should protrude 85mm above the ceiling joists.

9.DOWNLIGHT SAFETY: Placed over down lights/ fire hazard: Safety Down light covers are recommended to install for safety and energy efficiency. Batt type insulation melts and allows a fire to spread.
10.SPLIT BATTS: Batts split and used further out from manhole, quite common.
11.INCORRECT R-VALUE: That is batts used with a lower R-value than recommended for the area. e.g. wall batts installed instead of roof batts.Or again batt insulation split in half or 3rds etc.
12.PAST USE BY DATE: Batts past use by date (squashed in packet for too long) don't expand up to claimed thickness thereby reducing the claimed thermal r-value.
13. BOWING-Oversized batts placed between joists cause batts to bow ,creating an airspace between the ceiling and insulation batt. Heat transference takes place through this airspace and the gaps.Heat leaks out in winter. Heat pressurizes into the home in summer through these pathways.
15.BLOCKING WALL VENTILATION: Extra heat gain through walls in summer. Batts pushed into eve area cause heat collected by the exterior wall that heats up the wall cavity to become trapped pressurizing through the interior walls into the home.
16. INTERFERANCE: Electricians interfering with insulation. Spaces where work men move batts to install ducted air- con and do not reposition it.
